Questions About Smart Watch Medical Alert Systems
Who is a Smart Watch Medical Alert System right for?
A Smart Watch medical alert system could be right for seniors, or people of any age who are:
- Looking for an easy way to call for help in an emergency
- Want Automatic Fall Detection on their wrist, not with a pendant around their neck
- Living alone, or left alone for long periods and need assistance
- Have a medical condition that could require immediate medical attention (such as epilepsy, seizures, strokes, heart conditions)
- Recovering from a fall, hip replacement or other major surgery
- May have trouble speaking clearly with 911 in the event of an emergency
- Want to maintain their independence, be safe, and have peace of mind
- Want to track their steps, monitor their heart rate all in one device.
Will the Smart Watch Medical Alert System work where I live?
Our Smart Watch uses reliable AT&T Cellular service built right into the watch (all cellular charges are included in your plan). No landline, cell phone, or Wi-Fi required to use our Smart Watch - it's all built right in.
How big is the Smart Watch Medical Alert System?
The Smart Watch PRO Medical Alert Watch weighs just 2.3 ounces and is the same size or smaller than other Smart Watches at 47.5mm (1.87 in) wide.
Do I need a cell phone to use the Smart Watch?
No cell phone or Wi-Fi is required. The Smart Watch PRO comes with its own AT&T or T-Mobile cellular service built right in, and included in your price.
Family members can download our free WellBe Mobile App for their iPhone or Andriod smartphone to unlock additional features. With the app on their phone, family members can track the watch location, "ring" the watch if you misplace it, and program in medication or appointment reminders. No additional charge for the app, and the person wearing the watch is not required to have it (but is welcome to use it if they like).
How much does the Smart Watch medical alert system cost?
You'll purchase the watch as a one-time cost, and add a subscription plan to cover the 24/7 monitoring and T-Mobile cellular costs.
The cost of the Smart Watch PRO is $149.95 for the watch, and $39.95 a month for the service. We also include a lock box at no charge for you to use to hide a key to your home so that EMS doesn't have to force entry and damage your door. Your price is locked in, guaranteed to never go up.
Options include:
- Automatic Fall Detection - $10.00 a month
- Extended Protection Plan - $5.00 a month
- Extra Charging Station - $29.95
Is there a contract or any hidden fees?
There are no long term commitments and you can cancel at any time. There are no set-up, cancellation, activation, deposits or up-charges. Once you choose your plan, that is all you pay and this price is guaranteed to never go up.
When you receive your SmartWatch PRO you'll get a copy of our Medical Alert Monitoring Agreement which states you can cancel at any time and will receive a pro-rated refund of any pre-paid amounts when the medical alert system is returned to us.
If you cancel service, you'll still own the watch and not need to return it to us, but please return the Lockbox unless you would like to keep it (just $29.95).
What happens when I press the button?
You'll be immediately connected with our Medical Alert Emergency Monitoring Center and will speak with a live, EMT/EMD-Certified operator who knows WHO and WHERE you are. The operator will have your Personal Profile and ask if you need help. Depending on your response and the situation, we will contact folks on your Contact List (i.e. a neighbor or family member), or contact the appropriate emergency responders in your area in the event of a real emergency. If we are unable to hear you, we will assume you need urgent help and dispatch an ambulance.
We also send instant SMS Text Messages to your contacts with cell phones to update them on the situation. Your family and caregivers can even reply to the text message, letting our monitoring center know of any updates to the situation.
We have redundant monitoring centers in New York State, California, and Nevada and we never outsource our calls overseas.
How do I set up my Smart Watch?
It just takes a few minutes to set up your Smart Watch medical alert system. You can see for yourself with our set-up videos how easy it is!
You'll just plug the Smart Watch charging cord into an electrical outlet, and place the Smart Watch on the charger to activate it. Once you activate the Smart Watch, you press the button to verify the connection with our Monitoring center and you are all done.
Anyone can do it, and the battery will hold a charge up to 48 hours (though we recommend charging it daily for best results).
Can I get a Smart Watch with Fall Detection?
Yes! The Smart Watch PRO from Medical Care Alert is one of the only smart watches with fall detection available.
The Smart Watch PRO has sensors built in that can detect a fall. If a fall is detected, the watch will ring and display a message that "A Fall Is Detected". The wearer will have 30 seconds to either cancel the alarm (tap the watch face "I'm OK") or allow the call to continue. Our emergency response center will recive the call and know that it was triggered by the automatic fall detection feature.
Fall Detection on the wrist has traditionally been difficult due to the motion on the wrist that could send false alarms and become annoying. The Smart Watch PRO from Medical Care Alert solves for this with a sophisticated algorithm, and the ability to easily cancel a false alarm.
The SmartWatch PRO is the only smart watch for seniors with fall detection, GPS, and app for family caregivers.
NOTE: No fall detection system is 100% accurate. In the event of a fall, the wearer should press their button if they are able to.
What colors does the Smart Watch come in?
Having said that, you can easily swap out the Smart Watch PRO watch band for lots of other colors. It's a standard 22mm width watch band and comes with easy "quick change pins" to let you easily customize your Smart Watch!
How does a smart watch for seniors medical alert system work?
Medical Care Alert's emergency response centers have EMT/EMD certified operators to respond to your call, and are trained to work with seniors. We have three USA-based centers for 100% redundancy. We have received numerous awards for our medical alert monitoring including "Monitoring Center Of The Year" award by the CSAA.
How often can I press the button?
What if my parent can't hear the operator or can't speak?
What's the warranty? What happens if something goes wrong with the smart watch?
Medical Care Alert is responsible for all service and repair as well as battery replacements during the 1 year warranty period.
You also have the option to add our Extended Protection Plan to the SmartWatch PRO to cover you for user damage, loss, or other issues.
How long does the battery last?
The SmartWatch PRO takes aobut an hour to get to a full charge when you place it back on the charger.
Can I take it to the mall or in the car?
What if I can't push the medical alert button on the watch?
The button is easy to press, and is designed for people with various medical challenges. We know from years of research, that in most emergency situations, people have enough time to push the button before losing consciousness. The ease of pushing one button to summon help is one of the key advantages of our system, as compared to trying to use a cell phone or other complex system as a substitute for a medical alert system. We also offer AutoFALL is available for our HOME and HOME & AWAY systems - click here to learn more about auto fall alert options.
Can more than one person be protected at a location?
br>If you choose an in-home system, we can protect multiple people at the same residence, with no extra charge for monitoring. For each person to have their own personal medical alert button, see the list below for costs (if any) and how many buttons are supported:

How will EMS access my home if the door is locked?
Can the system go with me if I move or am on vacation?

If you have our in-home HOME system, you can easily take your HOME Medical Alert System with you on vacation, or if you are a seasonal SnowBird. It is very easy to unplug and re-install. Questions About Ordering
How do I order the Smart Watch Medical Care Alert service?
Ordering your medical alert system takes less than 5 minutes. We will need the name, address, and phone number of the protected person and where we will be shipping the system to. We will also ask for you to provide a few names and numbers of family members or neighbors you want called in case of an emergency.
Once you receive the system, you will return paperwork to us. You complete your Personal Profile which includes additional names and numbers in the order you want notified, a lockbox code and any medical information or special instructions. This information is kept strictly confidential by our HIPPA-Compliant Emergency Response Center. When you order you will also need to provide your initial payment using a credit card or debit card.
Does insurance or Medicaid pay for a medical alert system?
How quickly can I get my system?
What payment options are available?
Will insurance pay for the medical alert system?
Generally speaking, insurance does not cover the cost of a medical alert system.
If you don't have an HSA or FSA, check with your health insurance carrier for specific coverage. Ask about coverage for Personal Emergency Response Systems with procedure code S5161.
What if I want to return the system?
If you wish to cancel the montlhly monitoring fee, just call us and we can terminate that service. We will refund any pre-paid balances on your account. Learn more about our medical alert return process here.
Can information be changed after a medical alert system is ordered?
How does your "In-Home Risk Free Trial" work?
We want you to be happy and confident with your system. But if it's not right for you, you know you can send it back for a full refund (minus shipping) during the first 14 days, no hassles.
After the 14-day risk-free return period you may still cancel the monthly service at any time, but the watch is yours to own and may not be returned to us.
f you're not completely satisfied, call our customer service team at 1-248-946-8172 and return the system for a full refund, or see if one of our other systems does a better job of meeting your needs.
Click Here to read the full 14-day refund policy and return procedure. No fine print, but one caveat: we ask you to actually hook the system up and test it with our Emergency Response Center to give it a real test before returning the system. After all, if you don't try the system up, then you don't really know if it will meet your needs. If you choose to return the system without testing it, then we will deduct a nominal $50 fee from your refund to cover our costs of programming the system and setting up your account. Please keep this in mind if you are planning to give someone a system as a gift. So test your system and see for yourself!
How to talk about getting a Medical Alert System
How do I talk to my family members about getting a personal emergency response system, and about paying for it?
Here are some articles that may help you to start the conversation about getting protected with a Medical Care Alert system:
My elderly parents live with me - why would they need a medical alert system?
My grandmother has a cell phone - why cant she use that instead?
While you can certainly call 911 from a cell phone or landline phone, this is not a substitute for a medical alert system for the following reasons:
- You Don't Wear It. The medical alert button must be on your person and available to signal for help in an emergency. If the cell phone is not on your person and easily accessed, you can't make the call.
- It's Hard To Do. In an emergency, will your loved one really have the presence of mind to open a phone, dial 911 (using small keys on the keypad), raise it to their mouth and be able to give their name, location and condition?
- Cell phones need to be charged. Will your loved one have it charged and on them, accessible during an emergency? What about at night while they are sleeping and have an emergency? Medical alert buttons are always on and have batteries that last five to seven years.
- 911 won't know who or where you are. Cell phones do not provide your name or location - the cell phone will provide 911 the location of the nearest cellular tower, and possibly GPS coordinates within 300 meters of your location.
- 911 is not always local. Some municipalities route 911 calls to a county or other authority. This can add time to getting help when you need it most. As part of our medical alert service, we verify in advance which services dispatch to your exact address - saving important time in an emergency.
